Elena Parent: Rep. Jill Chambers Draws A Challenger

Elena Parent, an Atlanta attorney and former legislative aide for State Senator David Adelman (D-42), has joined the race to unseat State Representative Jill Chambers (R-81).

On July 1st, Parent filed the necessary paperwork with the Georgia Ethics Commission to create a campaign committee. This will allow Parent to begin raising funds for the 2010 election campaign.

Parent is currently the Director of Development at HOPE Atlanta, an organization dedicated to the prevention of homelessness. Parent holds both a BA and JD from the University of Virgina and it's school of Law.

First elected to the General Assembly in 2002, State Rep. Chambers has won re-election three times with an average margin of victory of 12 points. In 2008, Barack Obama carried the 81st district with 53% of the vote, while Chambers defeated blogger and political activist Chris Huttman by 9%.

It seems many people were waiting until after the filing deadline to announce their candidacies. This is the one I'm most excited about so far (although Jason Adams' strong endorsement of Beth Farokhi makes me really curious about her).

The fact that Parent has ties to Adelman hopefully means she'll be able to tap into his fundraising base.

P.S. Adelman represents SD-42, not SD-06. SD-06 is Doug Stoner's district.

...and I appreciate the tip on this one.

I corrected the Adelman district. I knew that, but just got finished mentioning Stoner in the Golick piece and just carried it on over.

Here's a little about Beth Farokhi. And yes, her son Amir Farokhi is running for an at-large seat for Atlanta City Council.
Dr. Farokhi, a long time resident of Cobb County, has been in the field of education for over 30 years, starting as a public school teacher in Cobb County Schools. For nearly six years she taught elementary school in an innovative curriculum setting and served on county-wide committees for curriculum, textbook selection, mathematics curriculum objectives, and appointed by the superintendent to revamp non-graded curriculum and reporting system for grades 1-12.

She was born in Augusta, Georgia where she attended public schools. She double majored in Elementary Education and Health and Physical Education at LaGrange College. Dr. Farokhi obtained her master’s degree from Emory University and her doctorate degree from the University of Georgia.

Dr. Farokhi was an administrator in the College of Education at Georgia State University where she was honored for exemplary long-time service and dedication to the College of Education. In 2004, she created the Georgia State University Leadership Academy for Women, a year-long program focused on professional and personal skill development. Recently, she was a Co-Principal Investigator for the Integrating Gender Equity and Reform grant, a National Science Foundation collaborative with five Georgia higher education campuses.
Dr. Farokhi was creator and editor of the newsletter, Educational Equity Report for thirteen years. It had an international circulation of over 3,000. She served on the national board of the American Association of University Women for two terms as Executive Vice President/Secretary. She served previously on the Board as Regional Director for the South Atlantic Region for four years. In addition, she served two years on the national board of the Legal Advocacy Fund. She has served on the National Advisory Board for Gender Inclusion for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. She was a part of the Curriculum Advisory Board and the Strategic Planning Committee for the newly formed Atlanta Girls School in Atlanta.

Just a little rundown of our announced General Assembly challengers:

HD-51: Brooke Nebel against Tom Rice
HD-80: Keith Gross (assuming he survives a residency challenge) against Mike Jacobs
HD-81: Elena Parent vs. Jill Chambers
HD-109: Jim Nichols vs. Steve Davis (although Davis is a retirement threat)
SD-51: Joseph Mann vs. Chip Pearson (assuming Pearson doesn't run for Congress).

Those are all that I know for sure. Others who've run before may also be running, but I can't tell from the Ethics Commission filings. I also know that Earl Giddins is NOT running against Rich Golick again and that Jason Adams is NOT running against Ed Setzler again, nor is he going to try for Rob Teilhet's seat either.

Steffini Bethea filed her DOI for HD 106 late last week. I don't know how long it takes for the website to be updated.

Good. The 106th certainly has a Republican tilt (I think I calculated that Obama got 42% there last year), but it's one of many suburban ticking timebombs for them.

The Obama bounce in this district was signigicant compared to the 2006 results but so is the change in demographics.

Steff was an Obama delegate for the 7th district last year. She is also the interim President of the local chapter of the LWV. She's a very good speaker and spent quite a few days down at the capitol last session as a lobbyist for the statewide LWV.

Would Bethea or another run by Tony Lentini be better for us?

Well, I consider myself a friend of both of them so this is tough for me.

I don't like to go too deep into the weeds on public sites concerning numbers/demographics and such but let's just say I think Steff is a better fit going forward in that district.
