Welcome to Rural Democrat! I want to thank Jon for the opportunity to move my blog over here as a subsection of Tondee's Tavern. It is an honor to have the ability to post my thoughts and occasional rants on this great site. I believe that I can bring a unique and increasingly rare persepective into the mix here at Tondee's Tavern. Tondee's Tavern has established itself as the go to place for Democratic politics in our great state and it is an honor to be a member of this great team. Now, for those who do not know me, I am a Democrat from rural Middle Georgia. I consider myself to be a member of the the centrist to conservative wing of the Democratic Party. I am a big fan of the Blue Dog Democrats in the United States House of Representatives. My views are generally moderate to conservative with regards to social issues and generally moderate on fiscal issues.
Within this blog, I hope to focus mainly on Georgia politics with a little bit of Congressional politics, as well as political news from other states mixed in.

I have been watching and reading the Tavern for a few months.I stumbled upon the web site last year. As a Democrat in north Georgia I feel alone most of the time.Sometimes I feel threatened. It has been very cool to be able to read and share views with like minded folks on this site.I live in Cherokee county. There are a few Dem's here but not many.I know that the repub's would like nothing better than for me and all other folks like myself to leave the county .Actually they would prefer that I leave the state.Well I was born here and here I will stay. For the longest time Georgia was Democratic.I tend to think that the folks who wield the big stick now are the crummy democrats of yesteryear. You may ask "crummy democrats?".They were the no sayers. They were the liars. They were the persons with big heads so big that they forgot the constitution , the bill of rights , the Bible, they forgot everything except their money and their giant ego's.So what is my point to all this?No point really.Just a rant against injustice, a rant against ignorance in our legislature, a rant against republicans in general. Its time for a change here in Georgia. Its time to take back the Governors office its time to take back the Legislature its time to get back to the realities of life.Let people live their own life without the repub's shining their flashlight up my pants leg and tryin to force me to think small like they do! Plus it is time to join the here and now and get our heads out of the middle ages.I do have a question. Is Cherokee County considered rural? It seems like the "country" here. But who knows anymore.

I am in Cherokee.Sorry you all I just checked back in and found note about White County.
I wanted to relay something that I just heard about here, about a friend of mine.He and I were both in Vietnam back in the day.We both were Marines and both of us did two tours.Needless to say we were both affected in various ways. While I was wounded twice. my friend never received any physical wounds. We were both infantry grunts. Both of us are native Georgians. He has been out of work for several months.I help when I can but things for me are not that great either.Keep in mind this guy put his life on the line for all of us.He has worked most of his days.He did go to prison for growing pot about twenty years ago.Did two years. He applied for food stamps about a month ago.He honestly answered all questions. One of the questions on the application was had you ever been convicted of a crime etc.Well he got his call for the interview. They ask him if he had been convicted for drugs. Not murder not theft not assault not child molestation. They asked none of those questions. He told me the interviewer told him the state of Georgia would never issue food stamps to anyone convicted of drugs.Honestly we were both shocked. So I dug a bit and it seems that along with no stamps there is no professional licences to be had nothing!!!!!!!So cudos Georgia you just screwed a good man who put his life on the line. Thanks Georgia law makers for not helping in any way. When I heard about this I went ballistic.Talk about lyin cheatin good for nothing bunch of lazy ass holes. We both were screwed. As a matter of fact all servicemen in this state were screwed when this happened. This is not about Pot this is about doing the right thing.Ever hear of the Bible and Jesus and The Ten Commandments.Well he has disappeared and looks like he might be gone for good .All his meager possessions are gone.I am so disgusted that I want to scream and run around in circles pulling what hair I got left out.Honestly doing the screaming circle running thing is probably more effective than trying to contact my state rep here in Cherokee.Well I feel numb now.Thinking about this whole thing just makes me want to Quit.Have a nice day

Indeed it's pitiful that the US has an incareration rate that's 5+ times greater than most of the rest of the world, that there's 800,000 arrests and 400,000 incarcerations annually for marijuana, a large majority for simple possession, as a result of a $40,000,000,000 annual war on drugs. It's disgusting independent of your friends service to our country.

I realize that there is a possibility that my rant about my friend may have been misplaced here in "The Tavern" and for that I do apologize.I don't know.Sometimes I hear or see things that just do not jive with my particular sense of social justice. We all have preconceptions about how we see things or rather we put our own individual slant on things we see or experience.I am afraid that I do that myself and that sometimes I can't see the forest for my own trees.I want to be fair and that is the bottom line.
